A Message From Our
National Clinical Director

Dr. John Latham

I am very pleased to be leading the team involved in the launch of a new postgraduate training programme for Family Medicine in Malaysia. This programme has been promoted at the invitation of the Malaysian Ministry of Health, which recognises the need for strong primary care led by Family Medicine Specialists. Family Medicine is the cornerstone of all efficient health care systems. Evidence shows that Family Medicine effectively helps prevent illness, manages chronic diseases and reduces mortality.

The means by which Family Medicine improves community and national health, includes increasing access to appropriate health care for relatively deprived population groups. Improved early management of acute illness and better care for chronic illness (such as diabetes) reduces the pressure on secondary care services (hospitals). Serving the community as a Family Physician is a career choice to be proud of!

The new MInTFM programme for Family Medicine Training is a collaboration between RCSI and UCD Malaysia Campus (RUMC), the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) and iheed. We are implementing the ICGP curriculum for Family Medicine adjusted for Malaysia. The MInTFM Programme will be delivered in a similar way to the Irish programme in a four-year training scheme, leading to registration on the National Specialist Register (NSR). Each trainee will gain Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP) having passed the examination for Membership.

We look forward to greeting and supporting the next group of Family Medicine trainees to join the MInTFM Programme.

Our Specialist Training

Malaysian doctors may pursue FMS training using the Irish College of General Practice (ICGP) curriculum and assessment. Managed and delivered by RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus (RUMC), the programme will deliver a curriculum specifically adapted for the Malaysian context.

Delivery of the training will take place in local schemes. Delivery of training for each trainee will take place wholly within one scheme, undertaking both the two years in hospital practice and two years in Family Medicine clinics within the scheme.

Curriculum

MInTFM utilises the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) curriculum which defines the learning outcomes for the specialty of family medicine and describes the competences required to practice medicine as a family physician.

COURSE DELIVERY

The Hospital Component

The first two years of general practice training will be taken place in a hospital setting under the direction of Training Scheme. A broad range of experience from 4 to 6 types of different disciplines related to family medicine is necessary.

Each FP trainee will be placed in a primary care clinic under an experienced trainer’s supervision to establish the fundamentals interpersonal development and medical skills requirements. You will be exposed to patients where you can learn and understand the importance of family medicine and how is it different from hospital practice.

COURSE DELIVERY

The Education Component

The education programme forms an essential, integral and central component in the training process. The scheme consists of a day release course where it provides development of the trainee’s knowledge, skills and attitudes. This is facilitated by the Scheme Directing Team in a small group format. It is augmented by live virtual classrooms and self-paced online learning modules. This integrated course takes place over the full 4-year period of training.
